International 9800i

Descriptions:
The International 9800i is a heavy-duty, cab-over-engine (COE) truck model that holds a significant place in the history of International Trucks (now Navistar International Corporation), particularly in markets outside of North America. While it was discontinued in the US and Canada in the late 1990s, its production continued for many years in other regions, most notably in Brazil.
Here’s a detailed look at the International 9800i:
Key Characteristics and Design:
Cab-Over-Engine (COE) Configuration: This is its defining feature. Unlike the long-nosed conventional trucks popular in North America, the 9800i’s cabin sits directly over the engine, allowing for a shorter overall length. This design is highly advantageous in regions with stricter vehicle length regulations, such as South America, Australia, and New Zealand.
Flat Floor Cabin: A significant comfort feature of the 9800i is its flat floor in the cabin, which provides ample headroom and allows the driver to stand up and move around more freely, enhancing comfort during long hauls.
Spacious and Comfortable Interior: The 9800i was designed with driver comfort in mind. It typically featured air-suspended seats, adjustable steering columns, air conditioning, and often a spacious sleeper cab, sometimes described as having the “largest bed on the market” for its category.
Aerodynamic Design: Its curvaceous cab and bumper design were intended to decrease aerodynamic drag, contributing to better fuel efficiency.
Robust Construction: Known for its sturdy build, the 9800i is built to withstand demanding conditions and heavy loads.
Engines and Powertrains:
Cummins Engines: The International 9800i was predominantly powered by Cummins engines, particularly the Cummins ISM series. In Brazil, versions typically featured the Cummins ISM 420 P7-0 (10.8 liters) delivering 410 hp at 1,900 rpm and 2,000 Nm of torque at 1,200 rpm. Some markets also saw the Cummins ISX engine.
Transmissions: It was offered with various transmission options:
Manual: Commonly 13-speed manual transmissions (e.g., Eaton FTS-20112L).
Automated Manual (AMT): The Eaton UltraShift Plus 18-speed automated transmission (FO-16E318B-MXP) was a popular option, providing enhanced fuel economy and driver convenience.
Braking Systems: Equipped with air brakes, often with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) as standard, and a Cummins C-Brake engine brake (compression type).
Chassis Configurations and Applications:
6×2 and 6×4: The 9800i was primarily offered in 6×2 (single drive axle with a liftable tag axle) and 6×4 (tandem drive axles) configurations.
Payload Capacity: These configurations allowed it to haul substantial loads. In Brazil, the 9800i could pull conventional three-axle semi-trailers, spaced-axle trailers, B-trains (bitrens) up to 57 tonnes PBTC (Peso Bruto Total Combinado – Gross Combined Weight), and even road trains (rodotrens or “bitrenzões”) with PBTCs up to 74 tonnes.
Common Uses:
Long-Haul Road Transport: Its comfortable cabin and powerful engines made it suitable for long-distance hauls.
Bulk Transport: Frequently used for grains, minerals, and other bulk goods.
Container Haulage: Its COE design is efficient for port and intermodal operations.
General Cargo: Versatile enough for various types of conventional freight.
Manufacturing and Market Presence:
North American Production: The 9800i (and its predecessors like the 9700 and 9800) was produced in North America until 1998, when demand for COE trucks declined in that market.
Brazilian Production: After 1998, production of the 9800i (and its evolution) continued in Brazil (where it was manufactured by International/Navistar) specifically for the South American market. It was also exported to other COE-favoring markets like Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Africa.
End of Production: The 9800i’s production eventually ceased in 2015. However, due to its durability and robust design, many units are still in operation today, particularly in Brazil and other Latin American countries.
