Descriptions:
The Volkswagen Meteor is a line of heavy-duty trucks produced by Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus (Volkswagen Truck & Bus) in Brazil. Launched in September 2020, it represents Volkswagen’s entry into the extra-heavy segment and is currently the largest truck ever produced by Volkswagen worldwide.
Here’s a breakdown of what you should know about the Volkswagen Meteor:
Key Features and Information:
Development and Production: The Meteor was developed in Brazil with collaboration from the German engineering team. It is manufactured at Volkswagen’s plant in Resende, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Positioning: It is designed for long-haul road transportation and high gross vehicle weight ratings.
Engine: The Meteor is equipped with MAN D26 series engines, which are now produced in Brazil. These are 6-cylinder, 12.4-liter turbo diesel engines. Available power outputs include:
460 hp (28.460 model) with 2,300 Nm of torque.
520 hp (29.520 and 29.530 models) with up to 2,600 Nm of torque.
A hybrid concept with a total output of 700 hp has also been presented.
Transmission: It features a ZF Traxon automated transmission with 12 or 16 speeds.
Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and Combined Gross Weight (CGW): Depending on the configuration, the Meteor can have a GVW of up to 29 tonnes and a CGW of up to 74 or even 80 tonnes.
Cab: The cab design follows the modern Volkswagen truck family aesthetics, offering a comfortable and spacious environment with a standard climate control system. Higher trims feature a high roof sleeping cabin.
Technology: The Meteor incorporates various technologies for efficiency, safety, and comfort, including:
Predictive cruise control (analyzes road topography via GPS to optimize gear selection).
Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
Hill Start Assist (HSA).
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD).
Traction Control System (TCS/ATC).
Exhaust Valve Brake (EVB) for enhanced braking power.
Optional digital instrument panel.
Fuel Efficiency: The design and technology integration aim to provide excellent fuel economy for long-distance operations.
Versions: Key models include the 28.460 (6×2) and the 29.520 (6×4) and 29.530 (6×4), each tailored for different load capacities and applications.
Market: Primarily aimed at the Brazilian and potentially other Latin American markets.
